The Arrival, by Australian artist Shaun Tan, is a graphic novel that fictionalizes the tensions of migratory displacements, using historical archives and memory accounts. The narrative portrays a strange and unknown world, blending cultures and fantastical creatures, yet remaining deeply connected to the migrant experience. At the same time, the work connects with contemporary and historical displacement processes, reflecting the author's own experience, whose family has a history of migration. As the son of a Chinese-Malaysian immigrant, Tan utilizes his personal and familial experiences to create a narrative that challenges cultural barriers, establishing a certain universality of the migratory experience. The aim is to contextualize the work within a broader framework of global migratory dynamics.
